MOVING FOR MEAGAN
“moving for meagan” is a southwind fields initiative meant to provide our locals with access to healthcare that is sensitive and tailored to them, right here in the comfort of familiar surroundings at the Southwind Local Society! In doing so, we can increase effective communication between our Locals and their providers, and decrease anxiety that prevents many individuals with learning differences from seeking out and/or complying with medical and mental health care. By providing a safe, easy alternative that would allow them to easily access their providers at the Local Society, we not only improve both short and long term health outcomes, but we increase self advocacy and a sense of independence for those we serve.
our “Mcgee”
the special reason behind the movement
Funny, feisty, determined, loving, genuine and fiercely independent, Meagan (affectionately known as “McGee” around Southwind Fields) was a long time City Local and had known much of the staff for nearly 15 years. Though she bravely faced multiple health struggles in her life, Meagan was determined to live as independently as possible within the community, and she did!
Meagan loved life and lived it to the fullest. She had a large community of friends that adored her, and participated in things she enjoyed, her favorites being karaoke, dancing, costume parties, and kickball. On May 14th, 2024, our sweet Meagan went to be with Jesus after a sudden cardiac arrest. So many of our favorite stories involve McGee. She was a force to be reckoned with and still somehow brought calmness to a rough day. She spoke with passion, but just as often spoke with an innocence that displayed her gentle spirit. She had a laugh that could melt your heart.
Though our hearts are broken and grieving, it is our prayer that we are able to build a legacy in Meagan’s honor. We can do this by both encouraging and educating our friends with special needs to focus on their wellbeing and get up and move for Meagan!
no pressure, just fun.
